Pumpkins and Melons

I am walking down the streets of my neighbourhood: most of the doorsteps and windows are decorated with pumpkins for the Halloween.
Looking at them I can nearly see those little, happy hands who carved the spooky faces and I can nearly hear their laughter.

I love this feeling .❤️

But inside my head I can also hear the greek word “peponi” (melon) whispering and finally greeting me.After such a long journey the word asks me to honour it!

Did you know that the word pumpkin comes from the ancient greek word “πέπων” (/pepon/)for the large melon?

The word “pepon” travelled from the greek language to the latin language (“pepon”), then to to the french (“pompon”)and it finally made its way to the english language as “pumpion” and later “pumpkin”. Some older versions of Cinderella use the word “pumpion” too.
Happy Halloween !
